Where were you when on 9/11
I was early for my 8am handball class at the Texas A&M Student Rec Center. I was talking with my classmates about the back hand technique Coach had taught us the last week. It was 8:10 when Coach finally came down, we all kinda of hoped he wouldn't so we could go back to bed. "Sorry I was late, something blew up in New York City and it is all over the news. Oh well, were still having class. Whatever it is, it will be a made for TV movie by Christmas....Alright, onto that back handed serve we were working on..." That was how I first heard about what was happening in New York City six years ago today. After class I walked through the lounge at the gym and every single TV was tuned to a news station showing smoke coming out of one of the World Trade Centers. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, was that really going on? Just as I set my bag down and grabbed a chair close to the big screen TV the second plane flew into the second tower. I watched it happen. I've never felt so helpless. I watched as the towers burned and as every TV personality fought for words to say. I watched as the students around me made phone calls and checked in with their families and with people they knew in New York. I spent the rest of the day walking from one TV to another watching what would become the "where were you when..." conversation starter of my generation the way the Kennedy's assassination had been for my parents. Six years later, the images that are no longer shown on TV are still etched in my mind and in my heart. The enemies that attacked us that day are still at large and our country's resolve to bring them to justice has waned as the hardships of doing the right thing have become more forward in our minds than the atrocities that happened that day. "I am proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free." "Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?"
It is good to remember: Watch videos from that day HERE
